Fair Work Schedules

For Immediate Release: December 2, 2016

Meeting work obligations that frequently shift with little notice and cause unpredictable fluctuations in income can be difficult for almost anyone, but it is especially challenging for parents and others with family caregiving obligations outside of work. Work schedule instability creates obstacles to accessing stable, quality child care and leads to stress that harms entire families. Because women continue to shoulder the lion’s share of family caregiving responsibilities, they are particularly harmed by unstable, unpredictable, and inflexible work schedules.

Solutions:
– Curb abusive scheduling practices and give working people the right to request schedule predictability and flexibility without retaliation.
– Highlight the importance of fair workplace policies for women and families.
– Recognize and support those employers who provide living wages, robust, family-sustaining benefits, and fair work schedules to their employees.
