Meeting work obligations that frequently shift with little notice and cause unpredictable fluctuations in income can be difficult for almost anyone, but it is especially challenging for parents and others with family caregiving obligations outside of work. Because women continue to shoulder the lion’s share of family caregiving responsibilities, they are particularly harmed by unstable, unpredictable, and inflexible work schedules.
