Nearly forty jurisdictions in the United States, guarantee workers the right to earn paid sick time; beginning in 2017, federal contractors will also be required to ensure that workers on federal contract jobs earn paid sick time. But 41 million private sector workers in the United States are left out of this patchwork – with impacts on workers’ and families’ job security, earnings and health, health care system costs and community and public health risks – and employers are increasingly looking for a basic national standard.
Solutions:
– We need the implementation and enforcement of a national paid sick days law
– Make sure that workers can earn access to job-protected paid sick and safe time to use when they need to recover from an illness, seek preventive care, care for a family member who is ill or needs medical care, or afford survivors of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault access to services related to the violence.
