Sexual Violence in Higher Education

For Immediate Release: December 2, 2016

When campus environments are hostile because of sexual harassment, assault, or violence, students cannot learn and are denied educational opportunities. For women and girls in education, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and Title IX Coordinators are fundamental to ensuring all students have equal educational opportunities regardless of gender.

– We must continue to protect Title IX which plays a critical role in ending sexual violence on college campuses.
– Ensure that students are free from sexual harassment and violence by requiring biennial climate surveys at all colleges and universities.
– Make sure that all schools offer confidential resources to students, faculty, and staff.
– We must include additional support for schools to educate students, faculty, and staff, particularly Title IX Coordinators.
