Workplace Discrimination

For Immediate Release: November 30, 2016

Eradicate discrimination to ensure that workplaces are fair, safe and inclusive. America’s workforce is more diverse than ever, and yet too often women, workers of color, workers with disabilities, older workers, and LGBT workers face barriers to employment and advancement. Furthermore, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers do not currently have any explicit federal protections.

Solutions:
– Pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA)
– Work hard to pass the Equality Act, ensuring that all major federal civil rights laws are fully extended to LGBTQ people and that gender protections are finally included in Titles II and VI of the Civil Rights Act.
– Work to enact the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA)
– “Ban the box” and adopt other Fair Chance Hiring practices for all federal hiring and federal contract hiring; ban use of credit checks in federal hiring and federal contract hiring, except in cases where it is relevant to national security; and work with Congress to sharply curtail these practices in the private sector, allowing background checks only after conditional offers of employment are made.
